Journal - Featured Birds - February 2009

#606 - Sandhill Crane
Sandhill Cranes are annual winter visitors to southeast Arizona and can be found in numbers in Sulphur Springs Valley, usually from  early October to mid March. Many birds roost at Whitewater Draw Wildlife Area where birders can enjoy the sight and sound of many thousands of birds as they depart and return from feeding in the valley. This individual was photographed at Whitewater Draw on January 17, 2008.

#607 - Baird's Sparrow
Baird's Sparrow is a rare to uncommon (and often difficult to find) winter visitor to SE Arizona, reliably present from October to February, although sometimes earlier and later by up to a month. My own extreme dates are September 4 and March 2. San Rafael Valley is the easiest, publicly accessible, location to find the bird and this individual was photographed there on October 3, 2007.

#608 Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet
Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet is an uncommon breeder in Southeast Arizona; rare and often hard to find in winter. At this season, birds are most easily detected by listening for their distinctive "eek" call. Some returning birds drift back in February and nest building can be underway by late March. This individual was photographed at St. David Monastery on March 4, 2008.
