#616 - Five-striped Sparrow
Five striped Sparrow is one of the most highly sought species by birders visiting southeast Arizona. The bird's U.S. range is quite limited and California Gulch is the easiest place to find them (try Sycamore Canyon if you like difficult hikes). They are sometimes present from early April through October and can usually be found reliably from May through September. This individual was photographed in California Gulch on May 28, 2008.

#617 - Thick-billed Kingbird
Thick-billed Kingbird is an uncommon nesting species in southeastern Arizona, reliably present from May through August. As with most kingbirds, Thick-billed often perches conspicuously which together with its loud calls make the bird fairly easy to detect.  Look for it in several locations around Patagonia including the Roadside Rest area, along Blue Haven Road and near the Paton's Yard. This individual was photographed in California Gulch on May 6, 2005.

#618 - Botteri's Sparrow
Botteri's Sparrow is a fairly common breeding species in SE AZ, reliably present from May through September. Listen for them in mesquite-grassland habitat in mountain foothills such as lower Garden Canyon; and many other grassland areas such as Patagonia Lake road and near the San Pedro House. Although they wait for the summer rain to breed, singing birds can often be heard shortly after they arrive in late April; sometimes mid April or even earlier in recent years. This individual was photographed in Garden Canyon on July 17, 2008.
