Nogales, AZ -- General Information

Overview Map & Directions City Map Selected Accommodations SE AZ Overview Map

Nogales is a busy border town of 15,000 people, located approximately 60 miles (1 hour) south of Tucson in Santa Cruz County. Just across the border is Nogales, Sonora, Mexico. Due to their strategic location on the main route to Hermosillo (the capital of Sonora), the two Nogales' represent a major area of commerce. Although not the most celubrious of locations (strictly my opinion), it is a tourist area with good visitor facilities and there are plenty of  motels and restaurants.

Nogales is a convenient place to stay for birding at Arivaca Lake, Buenos Aires NWR, California Gulch, Kino Springs, Pena Blanca Lake, Tubac and Sycamore Canyon. It's also close enough to Madera Canyon to be a practical and less expensive alternative to staying in Green Valley. If you want to do the tourist thing along with your birding, you can easily walk across the border to do some shopping, dining, etc.
