Gallery currently contains
1632 images representing 479 species in 71 families
This photo gallery contains a collection of all the images that I initially publish in my journal as I go about my daily birding. Images make it into the gallery for a variety of reasons -- most are "average" quality, some are "excellent" and there are a few poor images that have intrinsic value such as documenting a bird. With the exception of older digiscoped images, most images are shot using hand-held equipment.

Please respect my work by not copying photos without my permission. At my discretion, I may provide unlabeled, uncompressed images free of charge for personal use or for any type of non profit use. Commercial use requires a fee (no exceptions). Copyright Info.

About the images: Standard images (the vast majority in the gallery) are sized at 504 pixels vertically and the layout is designed for a screen resolution of 1024 x 768. Please let me know about any problems -- I have only tested operation and formatting with Internet Explorer and Netscape (display optimized for Netscape 7). All images are heavily compressed and I try to keep image file sizes to a maximum of 70KB, smaller if possible, occasionally larger as necessary to maintain image quality. In some cases, I publish images that are larger than 504 pixels vertically and such images may be over 100KB. Large images are best viewed using the view by date feature for the appropriate month. Note: images will not display correctly if Javascript is disabled.

Getting around the gallery
You can access the images by several different methods. For general browsing to see what's in the gallery, you'll find it best to use the family links in the main header or perhaps the master index in the index header (top left). If you are interested in a particular species, the "direct select" link is the quickest method. The index section also has links to specific categories and a link to the Trip Photo Index.

General information: Most of the indexes are available in list style (image filenames) and thumbnail style. When an  index that has both styles available is displayed in the contents window (at left), you can toggle back and forth between list and thumbnail styles. Whenever a thumbnail is displayed, you can determine the size of the main image that it represents (in pixels and bytes) by mousing over the thumbnail. To display an image in the main (this) window, click on an image filename link or a thumbnail. Click on the displayed image to go directly to the journal entry for the date on which the image was taken. Click "Gallery Home" in the main header to redisplay this page and the "recent photos" list.

Family Index: The family links in the main header can be sorted alphabetically or systematically in Clements order (default). You can also select list (default) or thumbnail style links (link style selection affects all subsequent family selections from the header). Clicking a family name displays a family index in the selected link style (list style displays image filenames). For both styles, species are listed in systematic order and images are listed in date order. In list style, clicking a species name will display the thumbnails for that species.

Master Index: Contains a list of all images arranged by family and species (in systematic order) with images in date order. In both list and thumbnail styles, clicking a family header will display a list of thumbnails for that family. In list style, clicking a species name will display the thumbnails for that species. Note: the thumbnail style master index will take a while to load if you have a low speed internet connection.

Direct Select: Displays drop down select lists for family and species. Click the family sort option buttons to sort the family names alphabetically or systematically (default). Numbers after the family names show the number of species in the family. Selecting a family will display the available species in the species select list. Numbers after the species name show the number of images available. Note: only families and species that I have photographed appear in the select lists -- duh!
Equipment History: In February, 2002, I purchased my first camera, an Olympus C-700 digital camera. Then began the painfully slow learning process of using the camera either directly, or  "digiscoping" through my Swarovski ST HD 80 scope. In mid December 2002, I began using a Nikon Coolpix 4500 digital camera, primarily for digiscoping. In January 2004, I switched to a Canon 10D digital camera and Canon 100-400mm f/5.6 image stabilized lens as my primary equipment. In October 2004, I replaced the 10D with a 20D. In September 2005, I purchased a 300mm f/4 image stabilized lens. In October 2005, I purchased a Canon 1D Mark II and kept the 20D as backup. In April 2006, I added a 400mm DO IS lens. See the Photography section for info.
