Personal guiding rates  
Personal guiding rates are intended for several people or small groups. There's no actual limit to the number of people, but in reality there is a practical limit. Some guides double the rate for each extra person, some charge a much higher minimum and include transportation and/or food. Not me -- I'll find the birds, you provide the rental vehicle and bring your own food. I've tried to strike a balance and I hope you think my rates are reasonable. I'd love to charge more, but hey, it's only birding not brain surgery.

Please read this entire section to ensure that you understand all the charges and other factors that may apply to your situation -- basic rate and (if applicable) extra hours above 8, night birding charge and vehicle charge if my vehicle is used. If in doubt, please ask for clarification.

Night birding
In addition to any extra hour charges that may be incurred (at the same hourly rate as day birding), there is a surcharge of $30 per session regardless of  the number of persons. Note: "night birding" surcharge still applies if we go owling in the pre-dawn hours. If we go owling in the pre-dawn hours and at night, the surcharge is $60.

Deposit
I require a deposit of $50 per day, or 20% of the expected minimum charges, whichever is greater. In order for me to hold dates, deposits must be received within 7 days after making a reservation (14 days from locations outside U.S.A.). I do not accept credit cards. A personal check is the preferred form of payment for both deposit and balance. Alternatively, payment can be made by travelers check or money order (U.S. funds only - no foreign currency). If all else fails, cash usually works. Overseas clients may find that Western Union (or similar) is the best way to send funds from the convenience of your computer.

Failure to receive deposits in a timely manner is an ongoing problem. At best, this upsets and alienates other potential clients who I have to keep waiting in terms of my availability. In some cases, it actually costs me business. Please, do us both a favor -- when you schedule my time either via email or telephone, put your check in the mail right away.

Important note: I reserve the right to cancel a reservation and accept other business if I do not receive your deposit within 7 days after making a reservation (14 days from locations outside U.S.A.). My bills always get to me within three days!

Cancellation Policy
If you cancel for any reason, the deposit is forfeited unless I am able to completely fill your canceled dates with other clients, in which case I will refund your deposit less $20. Alternatively, you can request that the deposit be applied to a future trip. If you reschedule my services within one year of the original date (for the same number of days or a longer period), the full amount of your deposit will be credited, otherwise the entire deposit is forfeited.

Transportation
Normally, I do not provide a vehicle so you will need to use your own or rent a suitable vehicle. I can do all the driving if you wish, in fact, I prefer to do so. Please note that there are some locations where a high clearance vehicle is desirable, and a few places such as California Gulch that require it. Note: I will not undertake to be your guide to California Gulch, Chino Canyon and French Joe Canyon in a non high clearance vehicle.

If you have a large group, with enough notice I can provide an appropriate rental vehicle, such as a Ford Club Wagon 15 passenger van. In some circumstances (for example, if you do not drive), I can provide a rental vehicle. 

Note: If I travel to meet you away from the Sierra Vista area, the charge is 40 cents per mile with a minimum charge $25.00.

Options

If you like the idea of personalized guiding and you also want me to take care of everything else - no problem. I can arrange a partial or fully inclusive custom tour for just one or two people, you don't need to be part of a larger group to enjoy all the benefits of a custom tour. You can use the pricing information  listed under custom tours as a guideline, however, bear in mind that the cost per day will be significantly higher with only one or two people and less days involved. In short, if you have a special request or want to work with me on a basis that I haven't covered here, please ask - it never hurts to ask.
